Carol Coffman received her Master’s of Interdisciplinary Studies in Interdisciplinary Art from Virginia Commonwealth University. She received a BFA from VCU in Art Education and a BFA in Studio Art, with a concentration in painting and drawing, from James Madison University. Carol has taught Art in the public school system, teaching students in Elementary, Middle, and High School. Her commissions have included several portraits, murals, and a game board design. In addition to recent solo shows, she has participated in many juried shows, group shows, and has donated work to a variety of benefit auctions.
She works in three different series. The “Dolls and Fairytales” series uses fairytales and children’s playthings as imagery to explore gender roles, fears, vulnerability, alienation, and irrational expectations. Often the imagery is humorous. These visual metaphors are not clear narratives, leaving room for the viewer’s interpretation. In the “Rhythm” series she experiments with different design approaches while exploring repetitive daily activities. The “Everyday Narratives” series celebrates the magic of the everyday and those elusive moments that seem charged or symbolically significant.
Her mediums of choice are acrylic, watercolor, color pencil, and soft pastel. She also explores printmaking and ceramics.
