ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"My interests lie in the tactile and surface qualities of two dimensional and low relief works. As such, my choice of materials has evolved and grown through the years, now including that which will emulate, simulate and exaggerate the abstract images from my environment. My art is the growth towards the edge of uncertainty, the willingness to leave a work at "this stage," often unresolved, knowing that there could be more; a change, a further investigation. With this in mind I hope that the viewer will catch a glimpse of reality in a new and different way"

BIOGRAPHY

Early training began with private study at The Academy of Creative Art under the Hungarian Artist, Josef Orsolya. After a firm foundation in drawing Ms. Woodwoth worked in watercolor, pastel and oils. Later printmaking and handmade paper became an important part of her ouevre and many pieces have combined all of these disciplines.

MEDIUM

The subject is creation, whether by man or nature, and the media and process used to express it is diverse. Surfaces on the canvas mimic surface in life, as the artist builds up and takes away, only to repeat this process, until at last she intuitively reaches a resolution, but not an end.· Inspiration comes from seeing a familiar object in a new way. At that moment the artist responds to the object so that it is no longer an icon but something unique, stimulating her to investigate and explore through sympathetic media. Woodworth's paintings begin well before the canvas has ever been placed on the easel by the collecting of elements and materials from the earth and sea including sand, rocks, grasses, shells, seaweed fibers, handmade paper, plaster and so on. Through the act of painting the object is translated and transmuted so that the surface becomes the painting and it is the viscerally directed process that guides the hand.

Painting - This medium allows the artist to negotiate the surface through paint on paper, canvas, board, foam core or metal. There is a slow but steady build-up of materials in th painting that satisfies the final surface of the piece. Sometimes the piece has small incremental changes in surface, orther times they are damatic. In these paintings you may find threads, flecks of metals, gritty sand, coarse fibers, grass, glue, rocks, handmade paper or any material at ahnd that speaks to the artist for that particular piece.

Printmaking - The artist loves to lose herself in the pure mechanics of the process after the conceptualization of the piece. There is the element of air about this in contrast to the element of earth we find in the paintings. This a more mercurial approach to the same subject.

Handmade Paper - The artist discovered the joy of handmade paper when looking for a more substantial means of expressing that which she had previously tried to say in watercolor on torn paper. In this medium "Creation" is the key. Choosing the elements, sculpting the paper pulp, piecing it together all form a statement that depicts a creation of nature.
