Artist Statement
Mystery, surprise, epiphany….these are the content elements behind most of my painting. Sometimes I choose the image because I am seeing it at that moment, and I, myself, am intrigued, or delighted, or have an "aha moment". Sometimes I choose an image that has lingered in my memory, and continues to fascinate me in some way. If painting can enable us to have conversations, then I hope my work provokes thought and remarks. I love line. It is a first love. I love color, too, but it is a difficult partner, and does not reveal its secrets easily to me. But I love most the connection, the story that paintings, abstract or representational can provide.
Once I found my way to the art department in college, I never wanted to stray far. The surprising alternate routes thrown down alongside the presumed path slowed my time for painting at different points in my life. But, at no time, did the images cease to crowd my mind. In fact, the years of waiting to paint again simply added more mysteries to solve, more surprise in which to delight, more "aha moments".
