July, 2010 • Featuring Sally Rhone-Kubarek and Carol Coffman
Opening Reception • Friday, July 2, 6-9pm
"Summertime and…" is the theme of a new show opening at Art First Gallery in July. Artists Sally Rhone-Kubarek and Carol Coffman will be exploring the season's influences on people and places. Rhone-Kubarek's work in this show reflects summers of European travel with her family. Coffman explores local settings as the backdrop for finding the extraordinary in the everyday.
Sally Rhone-Kubarek was born in Bucyrus, Ohio into a military family. As a child, she moved frequently, living in many States and for 3 years in Japan. She completed High School in Pennsylvania and enrolled in the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University. After 2 years she moved into Liberal Arts and completed a BA in Psychology. She married and in 1969 moved to Europe. For 37 years she lived in various European countries and Morocco. During these years she returned to art by attending classes and workshops in Europe and the States. She worked and studied in many mediums; oil, pastel, drawing, acrylics, watercolor, egg tempera, collage, silkscreen, monotype, ceramic glazes on tiles, sculpture, and combinations of all the former. Subject matter was just as varied, though her favorite subjects are figurative. She has exhibited her work in both group and solo shows in Germany and Italy. In 2004 she returned to the States. Sally and her husband now live in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Carol Coffman received her Master's of Interdisciplinary Studies in Interdisciplinary Art from Virginia Commonwealth University. She received a BFA from VCU in Art Education and a BFA in Studio Art, with a concentration in painting and drawing, from James Madison University. Carol has taught Art in the public school system, teaching students in Elementary, Middle, and High School. Her commissions have included several portraits, murals, and a game board design. In addition to recent solo shows, she has participated in many juried shows, group shows, and has donated work to a variety of benefit auctions. Her mediums of choice are acrylic, watercolor, color pencil, and soft pastel. She also explores printmaking and ceramics.
Rhone-Kubarek and Coffman are looking forward to combining their unique visions of summer to create an experience that the viewer will enjoy. Join them at Art First Gallery at their opening July 2, 6-9 pm. The show runs June 29-August 2. Art first is located at 824 Caroline Street in downtown Fredericksburg.
